On the occasion of CES 2022 in Las Vegas, Volvo Cars, a subsidiary of the Swedish Geely Group, announced the introduction of Google Assistant as the first automaker to do so. This represents the next step in the collaboration between the California tech company and the Swedish automaker, aimed at creating a seamless connection to the vehicle via voice control. When linked to their Google account, customers can control various functions in their car by giving voice commands to any Google Assistant-enabled home and mobile device, the provider advertises.

In this way, information can be accessed at any time, and various functions can be controlled and initiated remotely — including preheating the interior on cold winter days or locking the car doors. Additional control commands will be gradually added. For example, with charging planning, customers will be able to set and adjust the charging times for their fully electric Volvo by voice command in the future.

"The Volvo Car Group was the first to introduce Google technologies and services in its vehicles. Now, we want to be the first to fully integrate Google Assistant-enabled devices — this is the logical next step in our partnership with Google," promotes Henrik Green, Chief Product Officer at Volvo Cars.

With vehicle integration, the company aims to further advance electrification. Thus, functions will be introduced to exploit the full potential of reducing CO2 emissions from their fully electric Volvo vehicles. Charging is also expected to become as convenient and productive as possible.

Two-Factor Authentication

Additionally, for sensitive control commands — such as unlocking the vehicle — two-factor authentication ensures that only authorized individuals can hear or access the correct information at the right time, the manufacturer reassures. The functionality will be gradually made available to all Volvo drivers in the coming months. The prerequisite is a vehicle with an Android-based infotainment system that is connected to the Volvo Cars App and a Google Assistant-enabled device, the Swedes specify.

Youtube on Board - but Only When Stationary

As the first video platform ever, YouTube is now making its way into all Volvo models with the Android-based infotainment system. The app, which can be downloaded via the integrated Google Play Store, allows for video streaming in the car. Drivers can watch live streams, news, shows, and the latest video from their favorite singer or author in the vehicle. However, as a safety pioneer, the company does not want to compromise and permits playing the clips only when the vehicle is at a complete standstill. Nevertheless, almost continuously, as the data volume is unlimited in the first years.

Infotainment Speeds Up: Snapdragon with OTA

The upcoming all-electric vehicles from the Swedes are also set to feature the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, which promises to further enhance the performance of the Android infotainment system. The systems integrated into Volvo and Polestar models are said to respond faster and more reliably. The company combines its own research and development expertise with Qualcomm's know-how. Qualcomm's cockpit platform is designed as a central hub for high-performance computing.

With reportedly low energy consumption, the platform is expected to meet high standards for graphics, audio, and artificial intelligence, which the new Polestar 3 and the upcoming all-electric Volvo SUV are set to offer. By using the latest automotive platform, the next-generation infotainment system is promised to run more than twice as fast as previous versions, with graphics generation up to ten times faster. As part of the collaboration, future improvements can also be uploaded wirelessly from a distance via over-the-air updates.
