Continental, HERE, and Leia Inc. announced during the virtual CES 2021 the joint development of 3D navigation content for vehicle displays. This is believed to be an important step towards realizing a safe and intuitive user experience in the vehicle. The three-dimensional representation of buildings and topography from HERE will be animated using Leia Inc.'s light field technology. This solution allows the visualization of 3D navigation maps without the need for special glasses or eye-tracking sensors. The light field technology is said to make the 3D effect visible from multiple angles. Drivers and passengers can thus view the 3D content equally.

“3D display technology not only brings a wow factor to the vehicle cockpit, but with the right content, it also creates a more intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle and enhances driving safety,” promotes Ulrich Lüders, Head of Strategy and Portfolio in the Human Machine Interface business unit at Continental.

3D navigation aims to enhance driving safety

Various studies on traffic safety have shown that driver distraction is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents worldwide, the provider outlines as the background. In the USA alone, the American traffic safety authority National Highway Traffic Safety Association reported over 2,800 traffic deaths in 2018 attributed to driver distraction. The team in Hannover views solutions for an intuitive user experience as an important element for increased driving safety. They aim to offer drivers the desired content and features, while simultaneously minimizing distractions.

“Especially in complex driving situations like city traffic, it can be a significant challenge for many drivers to follow navigation instructions and maneuver safely at the same time,” says Lüders.

The accurate spatial representation of the real environment in the 3D solution from Continental, HERE, and Leia Inc. helps drivers quickly grasp the necessary information, orient themselves better, and remain more attentive to the task of driving, according to the engineer.

Highly accurate 3D content as a foundation

The content for the joint solution comes from HERE's Premier 3D Cities. These consist of high-quality map content and highly accurate 3D images of 75 city centers worldwide, which are fully interactive and customizable. Each building is indexed and accurately depicted in terms of its physical location, volume, height, and façade color. The 3D surroundings models reflect the topography for an accurate representation of a city's appearance. Additionally, detailed three-dimensional landmarks and the various architectural styles of the surrounding buildings for each city are integrated into the terrain. Based on Conti's natural 3D display, Leia’s light-field technology, and HERE's 3D map content, the companies have developed a demonstrator and are working to industrialize the solution for the next generation of vehicles, they announced at CES.
