Cellcentric's Climate | Weilheim Plant Gets Green Light

Transport Minister Wissing supports the plans of the Daimler/Volvo joint venture for one of Europe's largest fuel cell productions. The project aims to bring the fuel cell for heavy-duty transport into series production.

The Daimler Truck/Volvo Group fuel-cell joint venture Cellcentric can begin construction of its fuel cell production plant in Weilheim an der Teck, Baden-Württemberg. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) has given the green light despite the pending decision on IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) funding by granting a so-called advance start of measures without prejudice to the funding decision. The BMDV stated that it welcomes and supports Cellcentric's plans to build one of the largest fuel cell production facilities in Europe.

“Fuel cell propulsion is an important future technology for heavy-duty transport and Germany as an economic location,” said Federal Minister Volker Wissing. “The international competition is fierce and I am therefore particularly pleased that Cellcentric is investing in Weilheim an der Teck, Baden-Württemberg, and intends to build one of the largest production facilities for the industrial mass production of fuel cells for heavy-duty transport in Europe.”

The primary goal is to "maintain and further strengthen the excellent know-how of the automotive industry in Germany." Hydrogen vehicles could make a decisive contribution to climate-friendly mobility and logistics.

"Cellcentric aims to bring the fuel cell system to production readiness for use in heavy-duty transport. This large-scale industrial policy project creates important foundations for the European market ramp-up of hydrogen mobility. We support this endeavor with all our might," Wissing continued.

Regarding the approval of an early start of measures for the project, Cellcentric CEO Dr. Matthias Jurytko responded with delight.

“We would like to thank the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the Baden-Württemberg state government for their constructive cooperation and support for our project. Climate protection and the energy transition have become global innovation drivers, making it all the more important for Cellcentric to take a leading role in the development and production of fuel cells at an early stage.”

The joint venture between Daimler Truck AG and Volvo Group AB is building a large-scale facility for the industrial series production of fuel cells for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles within the framework of the "Klima|Werk" project in Weilheim an der Teck. The BMDV has already prioritized this project as an IPCEI initiative. As such, it is considered an important project of common European interest, which, through state funding, makes a significant contribution to growth, employment, and the competitiveness of the European industry and economy. However, a specific funding decision has not yet been made. By allowing a project start without risk to funding, Cellcentric can now commence implementation at its own risk as soon as possible, without jeopardizing the IPCEI funding.

Furthermore, Cellcentric is already part of the BMDV-coordinated Europe-wide Hydrogen IPCEI Hy2Move. Since the beginning of November 2022, the IPCEI Hy2Move has been pre-notified to the European Commission, and thus the Cellcentric "Klima|Werk" project is one of a total of 20 mobility-related initiatives from nine EU member states.
