CATL takes to the skies – Joint Venture for electric aircraft established

The Chinese battery giant and the state-owned aircraft manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) are working together on the development of electric aircraft. CATL is contributing the recently unveiled super battery with enormous energy density to the joint venture.

According to media reports from the Chinese news portal YiCai Global, the joint venture is planning the development of an electric fixed-wing aircraft. In addition to battery specialist CATL and COMAC, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Enterprise Development Group is also on board. The startup has an initial capital of 75 million euros. The shareholding ratios of the partners have not been disclosed.

Probably no eVTOL planned for now

Development of an electric aircraft has already begun at the COMAC Beijing Aircraft Technology Research Institute. This is said to be not an eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft), but rather a fixed-wing electric aircraft. However, it is not known how large this planned electric aircraft will be.

Condensed Battery – not just for aircraft

The new "Condensed Battery" from CATL is said to have an enormous energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram. The company has specifically developed it for e-aircraft. But the new batteries are also supposed to come for cars.

"Electric aircraft are possible if the batteries become lighter and more powerful to achieve an energy density of over 450 watt-hours per kilogram," Elon Musk once said in an interview.

The Chinese battery giant has now exceeded this goal. At the auto show in Shanghai, CATL presented both a pouch cell and a prismatic cell. Apart from the energy density, CATL, however, mentioned hardly any technical data but instead spoke only of innovations in "condensed matter," a new separator film, an unspecified "high-energy cathode," and a new type of anode.

What does that mean?

CATL may have achieved the next breakthrough in battery development. The enormous energy density could elevate electric vehicles to the next level and make ranges of around 1,000 kilometers possible for everyone. The battery corporation announced that it would begin production of the novel energy storage devices in 2023. However, it is still unknown when such a battery can be produced in large quantities and at what cost.
