The Freevoy super hybrid battery is expected to achieve an all-electric range of over 400 kilometers and ultra-fast 4C charging, setting new standards for EREV and PHEV batteries.

Freevoy is a transformative solution that redefines PHEV and EREV batteries

As EREVs (Extended Range Electric Vehicles) and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) gain significance in the new energy vehicle market, consumers are increasingly expressing frustration over their unsatisfactory experiences with such vehicles that rely solely on electric power. Limited range, slow charging, and reduced performance at low temperatures have proven to be critical challenges that require immediate solutions.

The Freevoy battery by CATL has been designed for hybrid vehicles with EREV and PHEV technology. It spares drivers the constant need to recharge, a common disadvantage of existing hybrid vehicles, and offers the convenience of driving to work for a week on a single charge. Additionally, it provides impressive charging speeds and a range of over 280 kilometers with a charging time of 10 minutes, effectively eliminating range anxiety for EREV and PHEV vehicle owners.

Behind the remarkable range and ultra-fast charging are continuous technological breakthroughs. Gao Huan, the technical director of CATL's e-car business unit in China, delivered a detailed presentation on the innovative features of the Freevoy during the launch event.

Improved Performance

Freevoy utilizes a surface modification technology of cathode material in conjunction with an innovative high-voltage electrolyte formulation to create a nano-protection layer. This effectively minimizes side reactions within the active layer.

By integrating highly active particles in an excited state into the cathode material, the transport efficiency of lithium ions within the material is significantly improved. With the help of the high-precision SOC full-scene model developed by CATL and the enhancement of intelligent BMS algorithms and hardware, Freevoy's SOC control accuracy was increased by 40 percent, and the overall pure electric utilization rate was increased by more than 10 percent, achieving a pure electric range of over 400 km.

At the same time, CATL conducted a model data analysis of the battery's charge-discharge polarization characteristics, accurately predicted the future discharge capacity of the battery, and developed a multi-level strategy for performance prediction and control for the battery, thereby improving the performance of hybrid vehicles by 20 percent.

Ultra-Fast Charging Technology

Furthermore, CATL has successfully implemented its ultra-fast charging technology 4C in Freevoy, achieving a range of over 280 kilometers with a charging time of 10 minutes. The effortless transport of lithium ions is enabled by the application of coating technology for the fast ion conductor on the cathode, the second generation of fast-charging graphite and novel nano-coating technologies for the anode, a multi-layer electrode design with multiple gradients, and a brand-new electrolyte formulation with ultra-high conductivity, allowing hybrid vehicles to offer the ultimate charging experience comparable to that of pure electric vehicles.

CATL's sodium-ion battery technology is also used in Freevoy, breaking through the low-temperature constraints for new energy vehicles. It achieves discharging capability in extremely cold environments down to -40 degrees Celsius, charging capability up to -30 degrees Celsius, and offers a seamless driving experience up to -20 degrees Celsius, comparable to normal temperatures.

Important Technological Innovations

To further enhance the low-temperature performance of the Freevoy, CATL has introduced three important technological innovations focusing on sodium-ion battery technology.

Firstly, Freevoy uses CATL's groundbreaking technology for the integration of AB battery systems, combining sodium-ion batteries and lithium-ion batteries in a defined ratio and arrangement with mixed, serial, and parallel connections, improving the low-temperature range by 5 percent.

Secondly, CATL uses the sodium-ion battery as an SOC benchmark for monitoring the AB battery system to support the calibration of the lithium-ion battery's state of charge. This increases the precision of the system control by 30 percent, extending the all-electric range by more than 10 kilometers.

To balance the performance differences between lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries at low temperatures, CATL has developed a precise BMS technology for the entire temperature range. This technology implements targeted zone management for different chemical systems around the clock, effectively mitigating issues such as inaccurate charge predictions or reduced performance in harsh environments with high and low temperatures.

Good Performance through High Reliability

The very good performance of the Freevoy lies in its exceptional reliability and safety. CATL has established a comprehensive reliability management and evaluation system that starts with material selection and molecular design, including multi-level protection structures, extreme manufacturing processes, comprehensive testing and validation, and data-driven early warning mechanisms.

The Freevoy has already been used in numerous models of various brands, including Li Auto, AVATR, DEEPAL, CHANGAN NEVO, and NETA. By 2025, 30 hybrid vehicle models from brands like Geely, Chery, GAC, and VOYAH, equipped with CATL's Freevoy, are expected to be launched and delivered.

The introduction of the Freevoy is another milestone that CATL has set for the industry through its tireless commitment to an excellent driving experience. Looking to the future, CATL will continue to work on pushing the boundaries of technological innovation, providing unprecedented new energy experiences, and accelerating the transition to comprehensive electrification.
