In a non-representative survey of 38 cargo bike manufacturers in Europe and Asia, they indicated that they expect 66 percent more cargo bike sales in Europe in 2021. The second "European Cargo Bike Industry Survey" by the European CityChangerCargoBike Project (CCCB), led by the cargobike.jetzt platform, conducted the online survey with Cycling Industries Europe and other partners. According to the survey, sales among manufacturers are expected to increase by 66 percent from 2020 to 2021, compared to 38 percent in the previous year. In Germany alone, 103,000 cargo bikes were sold in 2020. Overall, 92 percent of them are electrically assisted, with the 25 km/h bikes (Pedelec25) overwhelmingly dominating. However, the statistics from the Zweirad Industrie Verband for Germany and 2020 showed a share of 24.4 percent for non-motorized cargo bikes, which is significantly higher.

After Belgium, Germany is by far the second most important market for manufacturers for cargo bikes in Europe, followed by France. Fourteen of the surveyed suppliers are from Germany. The dynamics of the Belgian market can also be explained by effective subsidy programs, according to the interpretation.

Green Party calls for implementation of cargo bike subsidy

On a current occasion, reference was made to the beginning of coalition negotiations and the Green Party's campaign demand for a nationwide purchase premium for private cargo bikes. This demand has so far been rejected by the FDP but is now supported by the SPD, as the so-called election check results showed, which the Radlogistikverband Deutschland (RLVD) surveyed before the election and which were partially answered in great detail.

"The strong market growth and some existing delivery difficulties are not an argument against a nationwide purchase premium. Given the requirements of climate protection and traffic transformation, the market for cargo bikes is still very small. Most smaller manufacturers have little capital for large investments. And the current funding landscape with often short-term purchase premiums from municipalities and states is hardly effective and fair," noted Arne Behrensen, Managing Director of cargobike.jetzt.

The traffic light coalition partners should agree on a nationwide purchase premium for private cargo bikes, from which all social strata would benefit and which would support the young cargo bike industry in rapidly expanding capacities, demanded the cargo bike expert.

"In addition, effective and fair funding must focus on cargo bike sharing. Nationwide, 20,000 cargo bikes in sharing offers by 2025 would be an ambitious but appropriate goal!"

In this context, Behrensen referred to the first European specialist conference and exhibition on Cargo Bike Sharing Europe, taking place in Germany on May 20, 2022. Partners of the conference organized by cargobike.jetzt include the cargo bike sharing consultancy TINK and the Bundesverband Zukunft Fahrrad. The location of the conference will be announced shortly. At the recently concluded 2nd National Cargo Logistics Conference in Frankfurt, numerous manufacturers presented their innovations and also participated in the second edition of the "Cargo Bike of the Year"-Award by HUSS-VERLAG.
