Car subscriptions are trending, primarily due to quick availability, no additional costs, and flexible terms. Especially in the past year, when delivery times for new vehicles were sometimes up to 20 months, many drivers opted for a subscription, as reported by the industry platform autoimabo. The new report from the online portal has examined the trend and current developments. According to the report, 71 percent of all customers chose an offer with a delivery time of no more than 14 days. The demand for car subscriptions grew enormously in 2022. While the average price for a vehicle in June was still 505 euros, it increased to 728 euros by December, a 44 percent increase. However, there are always attractive offers on the market. For instance, in November 2022, the cheapest subscription price was 109 euros. The majority choose a contract term of four to six months, with about one-third opting for up to 12 months or more. The average car subscription customer is male, about 30 years old, and lives in North Rhine-Westphalia. Women currently use the offers from Finn, like2drive, ViveLaCar, SIXT+, and others only 23 percent of the time.

Every Third Customer Chooses an E-Car

The most popular subscription vehicle is the Fiat 500 Electric, followed by the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model Y. Thus, the top three are dominated by electric vehicles. The most popular internal combustion vehicles are the Cupra Formentor and the Kia XCeed. Electric cars are in high demand – with limited supply. Only 5 percent of the subscription offers are electric vehicles, yet 32 percent of subscribers choose electric propulsion. 49 percent opt for an SUV, followed by small cars (18 percent). Only 11 percent choose a compact car or station wagon. Surprisingly, there are almost twice as many hybrid cars as electric vehicles in the offerings, but only 7 percent choose this propulsion type. Diesel can only excite 9 percent of car subscribers, while gasoline engines clearly lead the ranking with 52 percent.

Ford takes the lead

The demand for electric vehicles and the limited availability of diesel options is also reflected in the data on included kilometers. Nearly 70 percent of subscribers drive little and plan for only 10,000 kilometers per year. 17 percent opt for the next level up to 15,000 kilometers, while only 14 percent book even more. The four largest automobile manufacturers Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi fall behind Ford. Currently, the brand leads with a market share of 8.7 percent. Especially the Ford Kuga and Ford Focus rank in the top 10 of the most popular vehicles. Tesla comes in sixth place behind Audi. Hence, nearly a third decide in favor of a traditional German brand. Only 8.3 percent want under 100 HP. For the majority, 100 to 200 HP is ideal, and more than a third prefer even more. Here, electric vehicles can score again, like the popular Tesla Model Y or the Polestar 2. A clear favorite across all categories is the automatic transmission. Only 16 percent of the offers are manual gearboxes.
