Car-free neighborhoods in Munich: Pilot project MCube aqt aims to create quality of life and mobility

In the project "Car-Reduced Neighborhoods for a Livable City," TU and the state capital are determining how sustainable mobility can be reconciled with improved quality of life and climate protection.

As part of the research project "Car-Reduced Neighborhoods for a Livable City" (aqt), the City of Munich and the Technical University of Munich, together with the Munich Municipal Utilities, the Hans Sauer Foundation, and UnternehmerTUM, are investigating what sustainable mobility in Munich's neighborhoods might look like. This summer, three street spaces in the southern Au and Landlstraße in Obergiesing will temporarily transform into public spaces with lots of greenery and places to linger and play. From mid-June to October 2023, the MCube aqt research project will conduct a practical test on-site. The guiding question: How can urban spaces be used differently?

Not about sacrifice: Fewer cars are supposed to bring more quality of life

The abbreviation aqt stands for "car-reduced neighborhoods for a livable city." More quality of life in urban neighborhoods through fewer cars: That is the goal of the research project. With a view to ongoing climate change, fairer land distribution, and the desire for mobility for all, the project team is working on future solutions for a livable city.

This will be tested this summer in the "Southern Au" neighborhoods in Au-Haidhausen and "Walchenseeplatz" in Obergiesing. Specifically, three street spaces in the southern Au and Landlstraße in Obergiesing will temporarily transform into areas with lots of greenery, places to linger, play, and relax between May/June and October 2023. They will be equipped, among other things, with raised beds and seating furniture.

Full Mobility Retained: Sharing Instead of Ownership

Additionally, new mobility points are being established in the residential environment. Here you will find shared mobility services, such as e-scooters, bike, and car-sharing bundled at one point for borrowing and use. In combination with public transportation, the mobility points offer citizens mobility without their own vehicle. The mobility points will remain permanently. The aqt project team wants to engage in dialogue with citizens. For this reason, the team has organized so-called consultation hours.

For the implementation of the project and the corresponding scientific support, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the City of Munich, the Munich Public Utilities, the Hans Sauer Foundation, and UnternehmerTUM have joined forces. Together with other partners, they are testing alternative uses for traffic areas and innovative mobility solutions at these two locations.
