BYD: Premium subsidiary Yangwang unveils luxury sedan U7

It is becoming increasingly tight for the German premium brands in China: Because after Nio with the ET9, BYD is also entering the luxury class: The nearly 5.27-meter-long luxury sedan Yangwang U7 delivers up to 960 kW.

The luxury segment has so far remained a stronghold for the S-Class and its ilk even in China. However, local manufacturers are no longer interested in that, as evidenced by the fully-electric Yangwang U7 from BYD, which easily produces up to 960 kW with four electric motors. BYD first introduced its luxury brand Yangwang in January 2023. The first model, the hardcore off-roader Yangwang U8, which has an empty weight of well over three tons and is inspired by the Landrover Defender, has already been launched on the Chinese market. Whether BYD will export its Yangwang EVs in the future is still unknown.

The MIIT: Democratic presentation platform for customers

It is interesting and surprisingly democratic that new models must be presented to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which then regularly publishes a summary of new and upcoming vehicle models. This process allows Chinese consumers to compare models with standardized information. As a result, many details become known before the manufacturer officially introduces the vehicle. At MIIT, cars are generally displayed in three-quarter view against a gray background, complemented by photos of the front, side, and rear—but not necessarily of the interior.

The U7 is expected to be 5,265 millimeters long, 1,998 millimeters wide (excluding exterior mirrors!), and 1,517 millimeters high, with a generous wheelbase of 3.16 meters, providing ample legroom in the rear. The battery is expected to offer over 100 kWh. The MIIT currently lists the drag coefficient at 0.195, but the frontal area is not mentioned. Visually, it clearly draws inspiration from models like the Seal, which is likely also true for the interior.

Insane: Almost 3.1 tons empty weight!

Yangwang has not managed to keep the weight down: the U7 is expected to weigh from 3,095 kg, depending on the equipment. The four electric motors and the large battery make a significant contribution to this. Each of the four electric motors is supposed to deliver 240 kW, with the system output specified at 960 kW in the registration application.

There is little information about the battery itself: It comes from our own company and uses LFP cell chemistry. The energy content is not yet known. However, the platform "Car News China" speculates that the U7 in its basic version might also be equipped with the 80-kWh battery pack of the Yangwang U9, which could make the range rather tight. For reasons of prestige, we therefore expect a 100-kWh+ option.

Not much has been communicated about the interior and equipment of the luxury sedan. The Yangwang U7 is said to feature a large panoramic sunroof, an electrically extendable rear spoiler, and a roof-integrated lidar unit. Optional features are expected to include aero wheels, various brake colors, and digital side mirrors. Prices are expected to be in the range of one million Yuan (currently just under 129,000 euros).

What does that mean?

China is now also reaching for the stars in the luxury segment - quite literally: with large and heavy sedans that unfortunately do not set benchmarks in terms of efficiency or bring new ideas. In this respect, a Lucid Air is many times more innovative. But for Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, the climate in China is likely to get even harsher.
