BYD Atto 2: Intermediate Stage for Europe
The Atto 2 should have enough space for five people with a wheelbase of 2.62 meters, but the interior seems rather mixed given the price. The central large display is known from the Atto 3, otherwise, the interior is discreetly designed. The center console offers a double charging tray, cup holders, and a gear selector lever in a diamond look – it fits and doesn’t clash anywhere.
However, what truly defines the Atto 2 is BYD’s new 3.0 electric platform. Without a drive shaft tunnel, it promises more space and flexibility – especially since the upper "lid" of the 45 kWh battery here acts as the floor. This "cell to body" concept is implemented very consistently and saves weight while simultaneously increasing stiffness. BYD states the range according to WLTP at up to 312 kilometers, but in reality, on cold days like in January, it is likely more around 200 plus or minus x... but it should be "rightsized" for most applications. After market launch, a larger battery option is supposed to be available, potentially increasing the range - but why not start with a better option right away?
The same applies to the front drive with 130 kW (177 hp). This is more than sufficient for most city drives – in a time when other manufacturers are showcasing larger batteries and higher ranges, this number also seems almost modest. Nevertheless, Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, is confident:
```“The small car segment is incredibly popular here, and with the Atto 2, we have a nimble and versatile vehicle that will appeal to this large potential customer base. The Atto 2 combines all of BYD’s strengths in batteries, electric motors, and cell-to-body construction in a compact package, bringing new smart technologies to the city SUV class.”
The market launch in Europe is scheduled for March, and the larger battery is likely to be presented then as well.
What does that mean?
The Atto 2 targets precisely the niche of compact electric vehicles – however, it doesn't offer a major USP in terms of price or technology. It will be interesting to see if it can sustainably boost BYD's rather sluggish sales figures in Germany.
