BVG relies on charging infrastructure from Hitachi Energy

An emission-free city bus fleet by 2030 – the intelligent charging solution Grid-eMotion Fleet is set to support Berlin in achieving this goal.

The Grid-eMotion Fleet charging solution, according to Hitachi Energy, offers the smallest footprint for both connection to the distribution network and for bus charging points, low noise emissions, and high reliability—three key requirements for bus depots in a densely populated urban environment. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) are relying on Hitachi Energy's Grid-eMotion Fleet charging infrastructure for the electromobility upgrade of their approximately 1,500-vehicle strong bus fleet by 2030, with which the next two bus depots will be retrofitted as part of the electrification program.

"We are pleased to support the city of Berlin in its transition to quiet and emission-free transport and a sustainable energy future for the people in this iconic capital," said Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Grid Integration business.

The contract includes the connection to the distribution network, power distribution, and DC charging infrastructure with charging points and intelligent charging systems. Hitachi Energy provides planning and engineering to integrate, install, and maintain the entire solution.

The chosen charging solution has a compact and robust design that requires less equipment than competing infrastructures, resulting in a small footprint, lower operational and maintenance costs, and higher reliability.

According to the press release, Grid-eMotion Fleet requires 60% less space and 40% less cabling than alternative charging systems, coupled with superior overall system reliability. The grid-code-compliant Grid-to-Plug charging solution can be installed in new and existing depots and can be flexibly scaled as the fleet grows and becomes greener.

What does this mean?

Charging bus fleets requires a lot of know-how - nowadays, there are various exciting solutions and the once major problem can be well solved.
