BVG: Electric Bus Fleet Grows by Another 90 Single-Deckers
The electric bus fleet of the Berliner Verkehrsgesellschaft (BVG) is expanding once again – the BVG supervisory board confirmed the contract for the purchase of 90 additional electric single-deck buses in its meeting on December 9.
The vehicles are 12-meter-long battery buses, known as depot chargers, whose daily mileage can be maximized through intermediate charging. This way, the nominal range can be far exceeded, as announced by the Berliners.
Which bus manufacturer will be chosen will be announced by the transport company after the legally required objection period has expired – according to information from the Berliner Tagesspiegel, it is expected to be the Dutch bus manufacturer Ebusco.
The approved budget for the 90 new vehicles, including the necessary charging infrastructure, amounts to around 65 million euros according to BVG. The delivery of all buses is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. This will increase the Berlin fleet to 228 electric buses. For the decarbonization of the BVG bus fleet, funding notices from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety, as well as the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, amounting to up to around 52 million euros are available, according to the transport operator.
