Bright Spot: Transit Model for E-Trucks Creates More Competition

(ots) The energy provider speaks of a "revolution in the charging station market": The transmission model is becoming mandatory in the e-truck sector. And it could help against "natural monopolies" and charging chaos.

The Hamburg-based eco-energy provider LichtBlick has welcomed the plans of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) to make the transit model a prerequisite in the tender concept for around 130 unsupervised rest areas, managed by the Federal Autobahn GmbH and the National Coordination Office for Charging Infrastructure, thereby introducing it for the first time at a multitude of public charging points in Germany. LichtBlick has been advocating for the nationwide introduction of this model for years.

"This tender process creates something historic. For the first time, fair competition at the charging station is being considered in the development of public charging infrastructure. The variety of offerings will ensure greater acceptance and transparent prices when charging large amounts of electricity on the go. This will prove to be a real booster for climate-friendly freight transport," explains Markus Adam, Chief Legal Officer of LichtBlick.

Groundbreaking Development for the E-Car Sector

The transit model enables non-discriminatory access for electricity providers to public charging points. This allows drivers of electric trucks and cars to choose their preferred electricity provider at charging stations on the go and use that provider at any charging point. The chaos of different access methods will be resolved, and prices and electricity quality will become transparent, the eco-electricity provider argues. This will promote fair competition and ultimately consumer-friendly prices at public charging points. At the same time, operators receive a usage fee for installation, operation, and maintenance, ensuring an appropriate return on the capital employed. The expansion of the charging infrastructure will thus be independent of state funding, according to the company.

Monopolies Lead to Excessive Prices

For years, LichtBlick has documented with the Charging Station Check and the Monopoly Analysis that the long-standing monopoly position of local charging station operators leads to excessive prices at public charging stations for electric cars. The Monopoly Commission also noted this link between high market share and higher prices in its latest energy sector report.

"The tendering process shows how the charging station market in the electric car sector can be reformed - through political will. The sooner this happens, the quicker consumer-friendly prices at public charging stations will be established for electric car drivers," says Adam.

According to the provider, the charging infrastructure constitutes so-called "natural monopolies," where competition will not emerge. The solution for consumer-friendly and affordable access to charging infrastructure therefore lies in creating competition at the charging station. Only in this way will a broad shift to electromobility and the urgently needed reduction of CO2 emissions in the transport sector succeed, believe the Hamburgers.
