BMW i5 Touring: More beautiful than the law allows

With the i5 Touring, BMW introduces the first electric estate car in the upper mid-range, which appears as the M60 with 601 hp and always offers over 500 liters of cargo volume.

We were already allowed to take a seat in the huge trunk, but “the real thing” can only be shown in spring 2024! It's good that our office isn't too far from the FIZ and the main plant, so we were able to photograph the i5 Touring directly.

The entry-level model also initially features the i5 eDrive40 with rear-wheel drive, 250 kW (340 hp), and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. This means it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in six seconds – up to 193 km/h, which is the limit of the electric motor. The 81.2 kWh battery should be enough for ranges just under the maximum 582 kilometers of the sedan according to WLTP. 575 plus or minus x is a good guess – in the currently cold winter it becomes 400 plus or minus x... the top motorization offers up to 601 hp with two machines, hitting the 100 km/h mark in 3.8 seconds, and a maximum of 230 km/h is possible with the Touring.

BMW's engine range also covers the full spectrum from the 520d and 520i to plug-ins up to the i5 as 40i and M60, and yes, the M5 (as a plug-in with a V8 similar to the one used in the XM) is also coming as a Touring! The drag coefficient and range will be slightly lower than the sedans due to the design, but there are still no final data available.

The prices? Currently around 2,200 euros more than the sedan. The i5 eDrive40 starts at 70,200 euros, while the M60 xDrive starts at 99,500 euros. For the Touring, this would mean around 72,500 euros for the i40 and perhaps a smooth 102,000 euros for the Touring. How much the new one has grown is shown by the predecessor in state services in the background. The Touring also starts well over five meters in exterior length!

What does that mean?

It will be big, it will be beautiful, and it will be expensive: With the new Touring, BMW is making a statement among the (still) rare electric station wagons, which so far only MG, Nio, Opel, and Peugeot have in their programs. But they are all smaller – although the differences in the trunk aren't that significant...
