The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has relaunched the funding guideline "Publicly Accessible Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles in Germany" and aims to support the nationwide expansion of public charging infrastructure with 500 million euros. A total of at least 50,000 new charging points are to be created with the help of the funding – 20,000 of which will be fast-charging stations.

From August 31 until January 18, 2022, companies, cities and municipalities, public institutions, and private individuals can submit funding applications.

"Charging needs to become the new refueling: Citizens should be able to charge their e-cars anytime and anywhere – at the supermarket, on the roadside, at restaurants or sports fields. Only then will we achieve a breakthrough in electromobility in Germany. Currently, more than one in four public charging points is already funded by our program." (Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer)

According to the BMVI, the first call for funding will support:

  • about 9,000 publicly accessible charging points with a maximum charging capacity of up to 22 kilowatts (normal charging points),
  • about 9,000 publicly accessible charging points with a maximum charging capacity of more than 22 kilowatts, where only direct current (DC) charging is possible (DC fast charging points), and
  • the grid connection belonging to a funded charging point or the combination of grid connection and buffer storage.

Up to 60% of eligible costs will be subsidized by the federal government – provided the funded charging stations are publicly accessible and operated with electricity from renewable energies.

From 2017 to 2020, the federal government has already invested 300 million euros in expanding the charging infrastructure in Germany. During this period, 30,000 public charging points were approved – 13,000 of which are already in place, with about 2,000 being fast-charging stations.

Other measures by the BMVI to advance a comprehensive public charging network include funding programs for local charging infrastructure and for the purchase and installation of private wall boxes.

What does this mean?

A good sign to refill the funding pots – because this slowly but surely reaches a critical mass in the mobility transition. However, those willing to expand and switch shouldn't wait too long, as such funding will definitely dwindle over time.
