Betterflow: Nagel semi-trailers save fuel with spoilers

A pilot program for greater fleet efficiency is starting with two semi-trailer trucks at the logistics service provider, equipped with aerodynamic elements such as self-deploying rear wings.

As part of a pilot project to optimize vehicle fleets, the Nagel-Group has equipped two of its semi-trailers with aerodynamic elements, including self-deploying rear wings. The components, which are designed to reduce air resistance and thereby lower CO2 emissions, were developed by the company Betterflow from Aachen, the group announced.

The CO2 emissions of a truck are significantly influenced by its aerodynamics. To optimize these, the Nagel-Group has equipped one of the test vehicles with three components: an underbody covering between the supports and the underride guard of the trailer, a flow-optimized element between the tractor and the trailer, and extendable rear wings that automatically deploy at a speed of 60 km/h.

“The Betterflow elements are used exactly where the air flow is disturbed or turbulence occurs on a semi-trailer,” explains Dirk Sieprath, Managing Director of Betterflow GmbH. “The fewer corners and edges a vehicle has, the less energy it consumes to overcome air resistance.”

The Betterflow project, alongside tests with e-trailers and LNG trucks, is one of numerous projects that the Nagel-Group is pursuing to reduce CO2 emissions, according to the company.

"As logisticians in particular, we see it as our responsibility to continuously work on improving our CO2 balance. Through tests with innovative systems like Betterflow, we can develop sustainable solutions early on and ensure a future-proof fleet," explains Dirk Lückingsmeier, Head of Fleet Management at the Nagel-Group.
