Berlin: Number of Cars Decreases Slightly - Few Pure Electric Vehicles

(dpa) Berlin has more and more residents - but the number of registered cars recently declined slightly. Vanishing in the sea of 1.1 million cars are the 17,600 pure electric models. In contrast, the number of motorhomes doubled and surpassed the BEVs. There are 278 cars per 1,000 residents.

The number of cars registered in Berlin has decreased in recent years despite an increasing population. In 2023, with 3.878 million residents, around 1,078,000 cars were registered, as the Senate responded to a Green Party inquiry. In 2022, there were slightly more than 1,087,000 cars, and in 2021 nearly 1,099,000 cars. In 2021, there were 291 cars per 1,000 residents; this number slightly dropped to 282 in 2022 and to 278 in 2023.

Recently, there were around 17,600 cars with electric drive, 50,700 hybrid cars, and nearly 13,500 with a so-called plug-in hybrid drive. The number of motorhomes doubled in just under ten years from 9,200 (2015) to 19,029 in the current year.
