Berlin needs to amp up the power with charging stations

(dpa) As the number of electric cars increases, more charging stations are also necessary. In this regard, a lot needs to happen in Berlin. The demand will increase significantly in the near future. At least now there is a "comprehensive charging infrastructure strategy."

The number of charging stations for electric vehicles in Berlin must significantly increase in the coming years. The demand for charging capacity will rise almost sevenfold by 2030, as the transport and economic administration noted during the presentation of their "Comprehensive Charging Infrastructure Strategy" on Friday. Currently, around 70,000 electric vehicles are registered in Berlin, according to the data. Of these, 90 percent are electric or plug-in hybrid cars and ten percent are e-buses, e-vans, e-motorcycles, and light vehicles.

At present, there are around 25,000 charging points available for them, where approximately 300 megawatt-hours (MWh) are charged daily. The majority of the charging points are private. About 3,850 are publicly accessible, of which about 2,400 are on public roads and 1,450 on private grounds. By 2030, a number of 400,000 electric cars with a daily charging requirement of 2,000 MWh is expected.

To meet the demand, a potential analysis for charging options on properties of Berlin's state-owned enterprises is to be developed, for example. Additionally, the Senate wants to ease the search for locations for charging points and support research and pilot projects in this area.

According to the strategy paper already approved by the Senate on Tuesday, the Economic Administration is to engage with employers and the housing sector on how to expand private vehicle charging options - currently and according to forecasts, the most important area. Capacity for spontaneous public charging should also grow according to the strategy paper.
