BEM: Don't forget retrofitting when promoting electric vehicles

Association sees the conversion of older commercial vehicles to electric drives as a neglected opportunity for CO2 reduction in the context of funding.

The Federal Association for eMobility (BEM e.V.) has pointed out what it considers to be a "misalignment" in subsidy policy. "While the Federal Ministry of Transport and the Federal Ministry of Environment subsidize the purchase of electric buses through two different subsidy programs, there is no support for the so-called retrofitting of existing buses and trucks," criticized the association. Although the conversion and retrofitting of vehicles meet the goals of the subsidy programs and would significantly reduce the emission of climate-damaging greenhouse gases, these measures are not included in the subsidy programs.

"Almost all German manufacturers lack deliverable electric series vehicles in the bus and truck sector. Additionally, the purchase is quite expensive, which many cities, municipalities, and companies cannot afford," explained Kurt Sigl, BEM President regarding the ongoing tax discussion.

Nevertheless, in order to reduce the transport sector's greenhouse gas emissions by around 40 percent by 2030 compared to 1990, retrofit solutions could provide valuable assistance according to Sigl. An equal treatment in the procurement of new vehicles is expected here, as is common practice in Austria.

Reduces Operating Costs and Emissions in the "Second Life"

During retrofitting, used commercial vehicles are equipped with electric drives and connected with the other vehicle components. The driving system is completely overhauled and prepared for a second, environmentally friendly life. The association considers the conversion to be among the most valuable solutions for sustainable mobility. Clients would not only save on the purchase of new vehicles, but could also expect lower fuel costs for years to come. Additionally, the retrofitting prevents the use of diesel vehicles elsewhere.
