BayWa Automated Gas Stations: Pay Digitally

BayWa is expanding its digital payment options at its nearly 100 automated gas stations in southern and eastern Germany. In addition to the digital BayWa fuel card app, it will soon be possible to pay via PayPal, Apple Pay, and credit card, as well as via paydirekt and Google Pay in the near future. To this end, BayWa AG is gradually equipping its stations for payment with the "PACE Drive App" in collaboration with PACE Telematics and cash register system provider Hectronic. PACE Telematics, based in Karlsruhe, is one of the leading technology providers in the field of Connected Car Services and automotive Cloud Platforms. In addition to the Connected Fueling marketplace, PACE operates a cloud-based, manufacturer-independent Automotive Big Data and IoT platform. With its technology, the Karlsruhe startup offers Connected Car solutions for both B2B and private customers. Julian Thomas Bartenschlager, Head of Fuel Station Management & Network Development at BayWa, is pleased:

“The payment process takes place without physical interaction at the machine and is therefore as simple as possible. This allows us to meet the requirements of private customers in particular.”

The feature is expected to be available at all BayWa automated stations by the end of January 2021.

According to BayWa, it will work very simply: First, the customer downloads the PACE Drive App from the AppStore (iOS and Android) and creates an account. As soon as the customer drives to the BayWa gas station, they will be notified of the mobile payment option and can access the available pumps at the station. The user selects their pump on the display, authorizes the desired amount, and starts the refueling process. After the refueling process is completed, the receipt is displayed and saved directly on the device. The invoice amount is paid in the background using the stored payment method (PayPal, Apple Pay, credit cards, etc.).

What does this mean?

This step was overdue and foreseeable: Digital refueling via smartphone at the automated gas station – this is likely to please many BayWa customers.
