Auto Mechanika 2024: Hongqi raises the red flag

Hongqi translates to "Red Flag" and is one of the oldest Chinese car brands: Founded by the FAW Group in 1958, Hongqi produced the state limousines for the Chinese government – with red flags waving on the standards. Since 2021, Hongqi has also been active in Europe – now they are testing the waters in Germany... with a Hedin branch in Schwetzingen.

In Europe, Hongqi launched with the EHS9, a large luxury-class SUV that subtly takes inspiration from the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. No wonder, as Hongqi's chief designer Giles Taylor previously designed the exterior of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Phantom. Before that, he was with Jaguar and originally began his work in 1997 with the Citroen Xsara.

The EHS9 is also the centerpiece at the Frankfurt stand. Accompanying it are the more compact EHS7 and EH7, which still fall into the upper mid-range segment.

We start with the EHS9 and are surprised by its high-quality and clean craftsmanship. Chrome, real wood, and leather are well dosed, and the dashboard features multiple screens, also subtly inspired by Rolls. In detail, everything is somewhat more affordable, just like the entire car, which, with a 99 kWh battery, is supposed to offer a range of up to 396 kilometers according to WLTP, and up to 515 kilometers with a 120 kWh battery.

It also takes other cues from Rolls: this is evident in the design of the 22-inch wheels, and there's a fragrance package, albeit with "only" 16 speakers, three 16.2-inch screens, and massage function in the seats. The seats are quite large, matching the size of the vehicle, and are very comfortable. Riding comfort is enhanced by air suspension — but only from the "Exclusive" trim level onward. There is also an optional two-tone version of the EHS9.

With a length of 5.2 meters, a width (too wide) of 2.01 meters, and a height of 1.73 meters, it sits alongside the long Range Rovers, EQS, and Cullinan and offers plenty of space for six or seven people. Prices start at 79,995 euros gross; as a six-seater, it costs 89,995 euros, and with a 120 kWh battery, it is priced at 102,995 euros.

The biggest obstacle to its spread so far lies in the "dealer network": There is ONE in Schwetzingen, which is why the Hongqi is likely to gain traction first in the Heidelberg-Mannheim area. It's time for Hedin to step up here...

What does that mean?

Design, features, and prices fit. But in this class, it takes history, prestige, and more than one dealer... smaller models are likely to score better.
