With a new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, the Austrian Post AG has put its 5,000th electric vehicle into operation. Thus, every second delivery vehicle in the fleet of a total of 10,000 vehicles now has an electric drive and is traveling CO2-free through the use of electricity from renewable energy sources. Peter Umundum, Deputy General Director, Board Member for Parcels & Logistics, Austrian Post AG:

"With our 5,000th electric vehicle, we have broken through a barrier and have a strong European partner on board with Mercedes-Benz, supporting us vigorously on the way to CO2-free delivery on the last mile. This year, we have a lot planned; in addition to the comprehensive switch to e-mobility in Vienna, we will also deploy the first electric vehicles in mountainous regions, providing a real advantage for our customers."

CO2-free Delivery by 2030
More and more packages, letters, brochures, newspapers, and magazines are being delivered with the post's electric vehicles. To achieve the goal of nationwide CO2-free delivery on the last mile by 2030, the post acquires more than 1,000 additional electric vehicles annually, according to its own statements. Michael Jopp, Managing Director Vans, Mercedes-Benz Austria:

“We are very pleased that the 5,000th electric vehicle of the Austrian Post is a star. Our battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eSprinter contributes to fulfilling our goals in the area of local CO2-free parcel delivery traffic. The versatility and flexibility make the eSprinter an ideal choice in the pickup and delivery fleet. Reliability and customer orientation are important values, both in logistics and vehicle manufacturing. Mercedes-Benz is committed to both.”

Since spring 2022, only electric vehicles have been purchased for delivery, with around 1,000 new electric vehicles added annually. The postal service relies on various brands, currently including new acquisitions from Mercedes-Benz, Fiat, and Maxus.

A portion of the electricity required for this is already being produced in-house, it is stated. Across Austria, photovoltaic systems are operated at 32 locations with a capacity of over 18 megawatt peak (MWp). As a result, the proportion of self-supply with electricity from renewable energy sources has increased to over 20 percent in balance sheet terms.
