Audi: Successful Trial by Fire for the e-tron at the Dakar

With four stage wins and 14 podium finishes in stages, the team from Ingolstadt considers the endurance test for e-mobility under the toughest conditions to be passed. In 2023, they aim to achieve the overall victory.

The most complex race car in Audi's history has passed its baptism of fire at the Dakar Rally with flying colors, at least that's how the Ingolstadt-based automaker sees the results of the Dakar participation with its e-vehicles. All three Audi RS Q e-tron vehicles completed the world's toughest off-road rally during their debut in Saudi Arabia, covering a total of around 24,000 desert kilometers – almost three times the 8,700 test kilometers Audi had previously accomplished. Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist finished as the best Audi driver team, reaching ninth place in Jeddah during a challenging edition of the desert classic. The arrival of electromobility has heralded a new era in off-road rallying, says the VW subsidiary.

“Audi instantly lived up to its pioneering role in the Dakar Rally,” claims Oliver Hoffmann, Audi Board Member for Technical Development.

The alternative drive concept of the Audi RS Q e-tron, with its electric powertrain, high-voltage battery, and efficient energy converter, has met all expectations. The vehicle was developed to operational readiness in just over a year. Thanks to the highly efficient electric powertrain, the three race cars competed in the new T1-Ultimate class for low-emission vehicles.

“I have driven many concepts in the desert, but the Audi RS Q e-tron is simply sensational in the dunes. The electric drive, with its good torque, perfectly matches my driving style,” commented Stéphane Peterhansel, the record winner with 14 Dakar victories.

Right from the start, there were daily victories

The Frenchman, who started with his compatriot Edouard Boulanger, won the tenth stage with the Audi RS Q e-tron. This brings his career total to 82 Dakar stage victories. Carlos Sainz, navigated by his compatriot Lucas Cruz, achieved the first stage win for the Audi RS Q e-tron on the demanding route from Al Artawiya to Al Qaisumah. Eight days later, he achieved his second stage victory.

“Especially in the second half, the routes were typically Dakar, very versatile and challenging with a mix of off-road tracks, small and large dunes, and difficult navigation,” Sainz reported.

Mattias Ekström and co-driver Emil Bergkvist improved from 23rd place to ninth position. With their daily victory on Stage 8 and two other top-three finishes, they have proven their steady progress in a discipline where experience counts more than in other types of motorsport. Team Audi Sport realized the preparation and successful effort in collaboration with Q-Motorsport. Sven Quandt's team brings several decades of Dakar experience.

"The historic victory of Carlos Sainz with the Audi RS Q e-tron on the third day of competition underscores the winning ability of the concept. Audi is the first team to achieve a stage victory with an electric drive concept. With this performance in the first year, the overall victory in the next Dakar is clearly our goal," announced Julius Seebach, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH and responsible for motorsport at Audi.
