Audi & SAIC: A3 and A4 with 800-Volt Technology – unfortunately only for China

Audi and SAIC are in agreement: The Ingolstadt-based company plans to base their compact electric vehicles on an 800-volt platform from SAIC.

SAIC puts Audi under pressure, quickly and decisively: After agreeing on a joint production of electric cars, they now aim to start much earlier than initially planned: According to "Handelsblatt," two electric sedans based on IM Motors' 800-volt platform are set to be manufactured in Shanghai as early as 2024. These will be electric models from the A3 and A4 series. In this case, Audi only needs to place the shell on the base and adjust the details. Additionally, they plan to develop "a new joint technical platform" for future electric models with SAIC, which is expected to be launched in 2027/28—a normal development period for a new car series.

Since the electric compact and mid-range classes are particularly promoted in China when it comes to e-mobility, this is where the strongest volumes are expected. This is one reason why Mercedes-Benz recently prioritized this class in its China strategy. Audi continues to remain silent on the collaboration with SAIC, but according to insiders, it is already "well advanced."

Audi develops the software itself

Audi intends to continue its combustion engines and electric luxury class with its second long-term partner FAW. Therefore, Audi divides its portfolio between two manufacturers, who have so far been able to offer partially identical vehicles in China (for example, VW's ID.4 X and ID.4 Crozz). According to Handelsblatt, the software will still be developed by Audi itself and they plan to use the more comprehensive package from the larger models.

What does that mean?

800-volt technology for an electric A3 and A4... software from the larger models – exactly what Audi would need right now in Europe – instead, the A4 is still poised to roll out with one last (?) generation of combustion engines, and the portfolio still begins at the relatively expensive Q4 e-tron, which does a good job but unfortunately already fails to set new standards technically.
