The Ingolstadt-based VW subsidiary Audi has opened a new Audi charging hub in the Obersendling district of Munich. Brand ambassador Felix Neureuther was also present. Just a few weeks ago, the Four Rings started cooperating with &Charge, a specialist in public reviews of charging stations. Following the locations in Nuremberg, Zurich, Berlin, and Salzburg, the charging park in Munich's Obersendling district is the brand's fifth. The new Audi charging hub on Zielstattstraße has four pre-bookable fast charging points with up to 320 kilowatts (kW) of charging power.

“With now our fifth Audi charging hub, we are defining a new performance standard for charging in urban residential areas,” says Bastian Geretshauser, project manager of the Audi charging hub in Munich.

They offer not only up to 320 kW of charging power per charging station but also ensure a constant charging performance thanks to power cubes, made from used lithium-ion batteries from former research vehicles, which serve as buffer storage and enter a second life phase. Thanks to this intermediate storage, an energy amount of 1.05 megawatt hours is achieved. In theory, this could charge 60 vehicles without interruption before the charging power gradually diminishes, according to the manufacturer.

The new hub is located in the southern part of Munich in a residential area with attractive shopping options, restaurants, and cafes as well as sports and leisure offerings. The hub is open to all vehicle brands; however, Audi drivers benefit from reduced rates. Depending on the contract, they pay from 0.35 euros per kWh and can pre-book one of the four charging points via smartphone and the myAudi app. Users of other brands using the ad hoc charging option pay 0.50 euros per kWh, either by credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

As part of the partnership with the provider &Charge, one receives so-called "free kilometers" for active customer feedback via special challenges at all Audi charging hubs. Usability, cleanliness, and the overall impression of the charging station can be evaluated. With the &Charge app, all charging stations across Germany can be rated, regardless of the provider.

Pilot project in Nuremberg: Augmented Reality experience in the Audi charging hub app

The manufacturer is also testing a new Augmented Reality application at the hub in Nuremberg in collaboration with Vodafone. "With a smartphone in hand, one can explore the Audi charging hub in Nuremberg and find further information at five different points of interest," explains Maximilian Oberacher, Project Manager of Innovative Services Audi charging hub. The integration of digital elements into the real world is intended to create a "wow" effect for some users. For example, the app displays virtual e-tron models and illustrates how the interconnected second-life batteries deliver electricity to the cars, the provider outlines. Additionally, users benefit from a wide range of digital media offerings that they can use for free during the charging process.
