Late, but it arrives: The Ingolstadt-based VW subsidiary Audi has celebrated the world premiere of its self-proclaimed "electric spearhead" e-tron GT digitally due to the pandemic. "The Audi e-tron GT underscores our claim as an automotive design brand with its design. It offers the most emotional type of electromobility with its impressive driving performance. And with its sustainable concept, it expresses an attitude," commented Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG. The entire production at the Böllinger Höfe is done in a CO2-neutral manner, which is an important signal for Duesmann – for the location, the employees, and the brand's future viability, as he believes.
Accordingly, two digital events mark the premiere of the electric sports sedan. At the so-called "Sprint of Progress," Formula E driver Lucas di Grassi and sustainability entrepreneur and Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg illustrated the dynamic driving performance of the Audi RS e-tron GT alongside the current Formula E race car of the four rings, the Audi e-tron FE07. They even tried to convey the driving capabilities over the screen, which is not an easy task. During the tour on the track of the Audi Driving Experience Center in Neuburg an der Donau, the dynamic performance of the new model was the focal point. During the "Celebration of Progress," the brand with the four rings presented the Audi e-tron GT to the public for the first time. In the one-hour virtual show, Markus Duesmann and Hildegard Wortmann, Board Member for Sales and Marketing, together with other Audi protagonists such as Henrik Wenders, Head of Brand Audi, and Marc Lichte, Head of Design, presented the highlights of the new model.
Good range, but Tesla goes further
Under the resounding label of Gran Turismo, the e-tron GT is thus positioned as a sporty touring car with high driving dynamics and "sovereign glider." Depending on the model, its E-machines deliver 350 kW (476 hp) or 440 kW (598 hp) of power. Besides dynamic sprints, the range of up to 487 kilometers (according to WLTP) should also fit, enabled by the battery with its 85 kWh net capacity. Its 800-volt technology allows fast DC charging with up to 270 kW power. The chassis also aims for a balance of dynamics and comfort and boasts technologies such as Audi drive select, all-wheel steering, regulated damping, three-chamber air suspension, electric all-wheel drive, and rear axle differential lock. The wheels are up to 21 inches in size, and the brake discs – optionally made of carbon-ceramic – have a diameter of up to 420 millimeters. The infotainment, the online services from Audi connect, and the assistance systems are intended to reflect the state of the art. As the icing on the cake, Audi has composed its own sound for the e-tron GT, which is supposed to sound powerful and progressive, as the manufacturer enthuses.
