Apcoa: Sustainable Parking Garage Service with ONO Cargo Bikes

Parking garage operators replace cars with e-cargo bikes for facility service. The concept of logistics hubs in parking garages is also set to grow further.

The parking garage operator APCOA Parking Germany has ordered e-cargobikes from the Berlin manufacturer ONOMOTION for the service of its facilities. The first units were now handed over by management at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). The electrically assisted cargo bikes will replace combustion vehicles at several locations in Berlin, Munich, and Stuttgart. In the parking garages at BER, Messe München, and Messe Stuttgart, e-cargobikes will be used in the future for transporting spare parts and materials between the parking garages at the individual locations. In Berlin, the cargo bikes will travel between different parking garages at BER Airport. The e-bike rider can also take over cash management, such as emptying the ticket machines. Previously, these tasks were performed with so-called pool cars.

"The advantages are obvious: E-cargobikes can be ridden without a driver's license and move quickly through traffic. Above all, they are CO2-neutral and protect the climate and the environment," advertises Anja Müller, Director of Operations at APCOA Parking Germany.

The measure fits into the parking garage operator's increasing commitment to sustainability. Besides the environmental aspect, processes would also become more efficient. From the perspective of Hansjörg Votteler, Managing Director of APCOA Parking Germany, it's a "win-win situation."

"The use shows the versatile applications for our e-cargobikes," says Philipp Kahle, Managing Director of ONOMOTION.

An expansion of the collaboration is planned, with the parking garage operator examining the use of cargo bikes at additional locations. Additionally, the provider points to its network of so-called Urban Hubs. In this context, parking areas provide the infrastructure for cooperation partners who use them as transshipment points for environmentally friendly logistics. Votteler sees this as the "parking space of the future." In the logistics sector, this includes transshipment points for delivery services and package lockers where customers can pick up deliveries themselves. Other Urban Hubs services available in parking garages include charging points for e-vehicles and rental stations for sharing vehicles. In addition to the physical, digital infrastructure is also offered.
