APCOA: Parking garages are becoming logistics and bike hubs for Mewa

Textile service provider uses parts of the parking garages as transshipment points and delivers emission-free with e-cargo bikes and e-vans. An area in Berlin City serves as the first shared location.

The parking garage operator APCOA Parking Germany has started another logistics project in which it provides the textile service provider MEWA with parking space for an inner-city logistics hub. The pilot project has already started in Berlin, but the collaboration is said to be long-term in nature. Currently, the rental clothing provider uses part of the parking garage under the Mall of Berlin in the center of the capital as an interim storage facility. Every early morning, trucks deliver clean clothing from the laundry in Groß Kienitz, Brandenburg, to the depot. Employees then load the work and business clothes onto electrically assisted, two-wheeled cargo bikes from the Berlin provider ONOMOTION as well as into electrically driven mini-vans and deliver them emission-free. The used clothing is brought back to the depot and transported back to the laundry by truck late in the evening.

"By using our parking garages as transshipment points, we enable more sustainable delivery on the last mile and thus contribute to the protection of climate and environment," explains Hansjörg Votteler, Managing Director at APCOA.

Less CO2, higher delivery rate

He points to the high importance of logistics for the workwear business. Through the new delivery concept, the textile service provider is able to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Further advantages are seen in faster and more efficient delivery. Moreover, bikes can find parking spaces more easily compared to trucks and can access buildings without direct driveways better. This allows for the delivery of more customers on a single route, according to the provider.

"In the long term, we want to operate our entire logistics in a climate-neutral manner. Therefore, we are pleased that through our collaboration with APCOA, we are one step closer to this goal," explains Kay Simon, Head of Mobility Concepts at MEWA.

The cooperation is part of APCOA's Urban Hubs concept, which aims to provide space for partner companies' services in parking garages. This also includes charging points for electric cars, rental stations for sharing vehicles, or lockers for package pickups. In the meantime, a vast network has emerged, which continues to expand, according to the provider.

"The cooperation is another important step for us on the way to the parking space of the future," states David Müller, Director of Urban Hubs at APCOA.
