With the opening of a micromobility center near Alexanderplatz, more orders for Amazon are to be delivered by electric cargo bikes in Berlin starting in July 2024. Amazon's delivery partners are expected to deliver more than 1.5 million packages annually with the e-bikes. The delivery area includes some of Berlin's most populous districts, such as Spandau, Reinickendorf, and Pankow, encompassing dozens of Berlin's neighborhoods, it said.

The new micromobility center is centrally located in the APCOA parking garage of the Alexa shopping center near Alexanderplatz. Additionally, Amazon's delivery partners are also delivering from Amazon's distribution center in Tegel via e-cargo bike. This also enables delivery in the Reinickendorf district, according to Amazon. Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager of Amazon in Germany:

"Expanding deliveries by e-cargo bike in Berlin is a big and important step for us. This not only ensures timely delivery for our customers, but also reduces traffic congestion in downtown Berlin. Reducing our delivery-related emissions plays an important role on our path to being carbon-neutral by 2040."

50 Micromobility Centers in Europe

Amazon's micromobility centers are hubs in city centers where packages are loaded onto cargo bikes for the final leg of their journey. With these, Amazon's partners can deploy new delivery methods in densely populated urban areas. For example, with electric cargo bikes or by delivery on foot, all aimed at causing fewer emissions through alternative delivery options.

Today, Amazon has more than 50 micromobility centers in over 40 cities across Europe. In 2023 alone, the number has doubled compared to the 20 locations in 2022, according to the company.

In Germany, Amazon and its delivery partners offer deliveries by electric cargo bike in six cities: Munich, Freiburg, Koblenz, Aachen, Essen, and Berlin. In Düsseldorf, packages are also delivered by handcart.

To push the electrification and decarbonization of the transport network, Amazon and its delivery partners are, according to their own statements, using over 1,200 electric delivery vans in Germany. Since last year, more than 300 electric delivery vans from Rivian have also been deployed in the Munich, Berlin, and Düsseldorf areas. Furthermore, they have invested in thousands of charging stations for electric vehicles at their German locations.

In 2023, Amazon and its delivery partners in Germany have already delivered more than 50 million packages with electric vehicles such as e-transporters and e-cargo bikes. Additionally, in 2022 and 2023, micromobility activities were expanded to Austria, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
