Almost every fifth car fails the main inspection

(dpa/fn) At the automotive technology inspection in Germany, officially recognized experts regularly scrutinize important technical components. How is the road safety of the cars?

Last year, almost one in five cars failed the regular main inspection. Specifically, 19.2 percent of vehicles showed at least significant deficiencies, according to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Another 13.1 percent of cars had minor deficiencies. There were no issues with 67.8 percent.

Predominantly "Significant Defects"

The majority of the failures fell into the category of "significant defects" - these can include excessively worn tires or a brake that operates on only one side. Dangerous defects - for example, worn brakes or a missing gas cap - were found in only 0.5 percent of the cars. Traffic unsafety was reported in 0.05 percent - this occurs, for example, with defective brake or steering systems.

The most common defect in passenger cars (Pkw) was problems with lights and electronics, which were found in 24.7 percent of the vehicles. Close behind were defects in the areas of axles, wheels, tires, and suspension, defects in the braking system, and environmental pollution.

Motorcycles in Particularly Good Shape

The current defect rates are lower than they were a year ago. At that time, the KBA reported a failure rate of 20.7 percent. Dangerous defects and traffic insecurity were also found less frequently.

However, according to the authority, the figures for the two years are only partially comparable, as there has been a change in the data source. Therefore, it is currently unclear whether the cars inspected last year were in better condition or if this is just a statistical effect. More precise information is expected at the end of August.

Incidentally, motorcycles were in significantly better shape during the main inspections. Only 6.9 percent of them failed.
