Alfa Romeo: Electric Giulia with 1000 HP?
The new Giulia is expected to grow and, together with the electric Stelvio successor, will target BMW's 5 Series rather than the 3 Series. The basis for this is the STLA Large, as insiders confirmed to us, which also underpins the future electric Hellcats from Dodge. And since the electric ones are likely to exceed 800 HP, such power escapades can easily be transferred to the future Giulia. "Nothing has been confirmed by headquarters yet, the inquiry is still ongoing," we were told in Hesse, where German Alfa communications are based.
In an interview with Autocar, Alfa CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato likely went ahead and announced a base model with 345 HP and an all-wheel-drive variant named Veloce with 790 HP. Above that could be the Quadifoglio with up to 1,000 HP.
For the long-range version, a range of up to 700 kilometers is sought, of which around 500 kilometers are likely to remain in reality. To achieve this, significant improvements are being made to the aerodynamics, and the Giulia could be further developed into a sporty fastback.
Thanks to the new 800-volt platform, the Giulia should also be able to charge quickly: From 10 to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes. To skeptics, Imparato explained:
"I don't want you to miss anything. I want you to love it."
If Alfa Romeo doesn't go electric, the brand will die, Imparato explained. That's why he wants to complete the transition from pure combustion engines to an all-electric brand within five years, from 2022 to 2027.
What does this mean?
The "cast iron" fans need not lament: Besides the Ferrari V6 in the Quadrifoglio, Alfa Romeo currently has no truly attractive or emotional powertrains in its lineup. And with the well-aged, driving-active Giulia and Stelvio, the brand is already backed into a corner. Hence, the only consistent solution for the brand's survival is moving forward. The stronger the lifeline, the better! Because even the electric "Brennero," the compact cousin of the Jeep Avenger, will only be a supplementary model for the brand, but not THE game-changer.
