Aehra– the Ultra Premium Electric SUV
The exterior design of the SUV was intended to be nothing short of revolutionary. To this end, Aehra had already secured the services of Filippo Perini, the former chief designer at Lamborghini, as Chief Design Officer, and Alessandro Serra, the former head of exterior design at Lamborghini, as Head of Design. The Aehra design team has now been further strengthened with the appointment of two senior designers, Alessandro Salvagnin and Marco Quamori.
There's a lot of Lambo in the Aehra
Salvagnin also joins Aehra from Lamborghini, where he worked as a design manager, and reunites with Filippo Perini and Alessandro Serra. Salvagnin was also a professor of transportation design in Milan. Quamori joins as a senior designer from Italdesign, where he worked as an exterior designer.
“As a start-up with an agile mindset, Aehra possesses the freedom, the passion, and the talent to unlock the full design potential of the state-of-the-art electric vehicle platform technology in a way that has not been done before, and that is extraordinarily exciting," commented Salagnin on his move to Aehra.
Perini emphasizes that it is the stated goal to fully exploit the potential of an EV platform. This has not only led to an avant-garde exterior design but also to a revolutionary interior concept. The exceptionally short overhangs of the vehicle, the long three-meter wheelbase, and the completely flat floor have allowed the designers to create a unique solution that transforms the interior environment for both the driver and passengers alike.
HMI Screen as Infotainment and Navigation – and as a Cinema Screen
One of the most innovative features of the Aehra SUV's cabin is the unique HMI screen (Human Machine Interface) spanning the entire width of the dashboard. When the electric vehicle is in driving mode, the screen is positioned lower to display all the information needed by the driver, such as speed, range, heating and ventilation settings, and navigation instructions. The two outer areas of the screen serve as virtual side mirrors, transmitting high-resolution images from two front-side cameras. When the vehicle is parked, passengers can extend the screen upwards, transforming the Aehra into a home cinema or a work environment.
In conventional vehicle layouts, it is not possible for front-row passengers to operate such a large HMI screen due to the interior dimensions, as it would sit too close to their eyes. Aehra has patented this solution. The start-up is convinced that it will set new standards in terms of productivity and entertainment in a vehicle.
"The Aehra SUV and the sedan that we will introduce early next year were conceived from the outset as true products of the digital age to reflect the modern and busy lifestyle of our customers," explains Aehra Chief Design Officer Fillippo Perini. "With the screen fully extended, passengers can relax and enjoy a movie while the car charges or parents wait to pick up their child from school or a party. And for those who need to work, the screen and the spacious interior offer the perfect solution for video conferencing. Instead of staring at your smartphone or laptop, you can sit back and not only see all participants in perfect high-definition quality but also hear them in crystal-clear, perfect audio quality."
Navigation, heating, and ventilation control via touchscreen
A second, smaller, elongated touchscreen is mounted in the center of the hand-stitched leather dashboard. It is located between the driver and front passenger and is intended to allow both occupants in the front seats to control many vehicle functions such as navigation, heating, and ventilation, as well as entertainment.
Yoke-style steering wheel
The SUV is equipped with an elongated yoke-style steering wheel – similar to what Tesla uses in the current Model S Plaid. As with the Model S Plaid, this solution is more stylish than practical. Additionally, the Italian flag adorns the steering wheel, indicating that Aehra is Italy's first and only pure electric vehicle brand. A small digital strip at the top of the steering wheel provides the driver with additional important information. The "steering wheel" is intended to be a homage to Aehra co-founder and CEO Hazim Nada's passion for the aviation industry. Like his co-founder and COO Sandro Andreotti, Nada is an avid pilot and skydiver.
"Much of what we have learned from the aviation industry has shaped the body design of the Aehra SUV and its class-leading aerodynamic efficiency, and this influence extends to the interior," explains Nada. "The monobody exterior architecture allows us to create a unique dashboard that positions the HMI screen in a way that a conventional layout would not allow. The result is a true workspace or lounge for front-row passengers, with an arrangement similar to what people are used to in the office or at home."
Inspired by aviation
Aesthetically, the seats are reminiscent of custom seats in supercars. However, according to Nada, much of the inspiration for the seats' lightweight, high strength, and optimal comfort also comes from the aviation industry. The seats, made of aluminum, recyclable carbon fiber composite, and leather, offer a level of comfort usually reserved for passengers in the first class of airplanes. This is even more true for the seats in the rear part of the cabin: There, passengers are expected to recline their seats and catch up on some sleep thanks to the exceptionally generous legroom and the relaxing driving behavior of the Aehra SUV and the extremely low noise level during the drive, if they wish.
What does it mean?
The Italian-American company has so far essentially self-financed and is about to complete its first external round of investors. The brand will unveil its SUV in October 2022, with a sedan to follow in April 2023. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 2025. Aehra sees its key markets in North America and Europe – but especially in China and the Gulf states.
