ADAC Test of mobile wallboxes: Flexible alternative with significant differences - Juice Booster in the lead

Flexible charging options instead of a fixed wallbox are usually a good alternative. However, there are significant differences in price and features. Juice becomes the test winner with the Booster,

For the second time, experts at the ADAC Technology Centre in Landsberg am Lech have scrutinized mobile chargers. Unlike the emergency charging cable with a Schuko plug found in many electric cars, which is connected to the household socket, mobile wallboxes are a real alternative to fixed charging units, the automobile club outlines.

Connected to a three-phase power outlet with a red CEE socket, mobile wallboxes can achieve a charging power of 11 or even 22 kW. The blue CEE sockets with 16 A common on campsites allow charging with up to 3.7 kW using a mobile wallbox. The mobile devices are particularly flexible when used with interchangeable adapters. With a Type 2 adapter, some can even replace the charging cable for public AC charging stations.

Good Results

In the test, the seven mobile wallboxes in the price range from 190 to 1449 euros performed well. The entire test field managed the basic functions, but the differences in equipment are just as large as the price differences. In addition to the available adapters, the testers also examined the possibility of wallbox control via a smartphone app. Moreover, all devices underwent a drop test, and those whose electronic unit could lie on the ground after connection were also subjected to an immersion test—each without complaint.

High Functionality and Features in the Juice Booster

Six out of seven tested models received a good overall result. The test winner (Juice Booster 3 air) received a score of 1.6 and impressed with its high functionality and features. However, with a price of 1449 euros, it is also the most expensive model in the test. Three mobile wallboxes (DiniTech NRGkick, Green Cell Habu, and Mercedes-Benz Flexible Charging System Pro) share second place, each achieving a score of 1.8. The charger from Green Cell scores with an integrated cellular modem that allows for networking independent of LAN or WLAN but does not offer interchangeable adapters.

Junsun: Even the Cheapest Box is Safe

The last place with a grade of 3.0 (Junsun SYCDQ316) is the cheapest mobile wallbox in the test at 190 euros. Although it managed to meet standards in terms of reliability and safety, the features are quite sparse due to the price. However, a deficiency was noted in the labeling. The manufacturer label required by the Product Safety Act on the nameplate was missing here, which leads to a downgrade in the main category "Safety." Manufacturer information is essential to be able to clearly identify a product at any time. This is not only relevant for the user, for example, if they need spare parts, manufacturer support, or other (safety-related) product information but also if recalls are initiated due to safety defects. Then the consumer must be able to recognize at any time whether their product is affected.

    Tips for Consumers:

    • Mobile wallboxes must also be reported to the network operator (up to 11 kW) or approved by them (over 11 kW). This must be done by an electrician based on the network operator's requirements.
    • Especially for cheap products from the internet, ensure that the wallbox has a complete and well-visible nameplate. The declaration of conformity should be included or at least available for download on the manufacturer's website.
    • Mobile wallboxes with multiple interchangeable adapters offer the greatest flexibility. A Type 2 adapter also enables charging at public AC charging stations.
    • A good smartphone app can significantly increase comfort, especially if it offers functions like charging history, current settings, and remote access.
    • Although mobile wallboxes are usually not always connected to the power grid, they should still consume as little energy as possible in standby mode. Models like the Green Cell and NEcharge are ahead in this regard.
