ADAC survey: Only about half pay attention to affordable gas stations and low fuel prices

(ots/fn) Many drivers know how and when they can save on refueling. But only about half consistently pay attention to affordable gas stations and low fuel prices in order to actually pay less. This is shown by a representative online survey conducted by ADAC among 1,680 drivers about their refueling behavior.

After that, 50 percent of drivers usually refuel when fuel prices are low. At least 51 percent of the surveyed drivers are aware that the cheapest time to refuel is in the evening.

It is noticeable that the tendency to save money when refueling increases with age. 38 percent of respondents only go to the pump when the tank is really empty.

More than Half are Price-Conscious while Traveling

Approximately 70 percent of respondents indicate that they behave in a price-conscious manner and compare prices and gas stations before refueling because current fuel prices are already high enough. Only 15 percent of respondents would change their refueling behavior and take a more intensive look at cheaper refueling options only if fuel prices were to increase significantly.

The ADAC recommends consistently comparing prices and visiting cheaper gas stations at favorable times, not only to take advantage of individual benefits but also to strengthen the market power of consumers, thereby promoting overall lower fuel prices.

Many Fuel Up at Different Times

Although fuel prices are always highest in the morning and lowest in the evening over the course of the day, three-quarters of respondents refuel at different times. That the choice of gas station also plays a role in the amount of the bill seems either unknown or irrelevant to many drivers: 50 percent usually refuel at the same gas station in everyday life, even though the price differences between individual providers and locations are often significant.

Avoid Refueling on the Highway

When asked whether they leave the highway to refuel during long drives, more than 80 percent of drivers answered yes. However, nearly two-thirds of those who refuel on the highway then opt for a full tank.

What does this mean?

Given the high prices at highway gas stations, it would at least be conceivable to refuel just enough to comfortably reach a cheaper station at the destination. Regardless of the amount of fuel, ADAC advises leaving the highway to refuel.
