ADAC: Summer Traffic Jams Stretch Five Times Around the Earth

During the summer holidays of 2024 (June 21 to September 8), the ADAC registered a total of 119,246 traffic jams on Germany's autobahns. This means traffic congestion saw a slight decrease of nearly three percent, roughly maintaining the previous year's level. In total, the traffic jams accumulated to 205,323 kilometers (a decrease of five percent), which corresponds to a distance about five times around the Earth. Despite the lower number, the duration of the traffic jams slightly increased by 0.3 percent.

Friday remains the most congested weekend day this travel summer by far, with nearly half (47 percent) of all weekend traffic jams. Saturday (26 percent) and Sunday (27 percent) are almost equal in terms of traffic load. However, ADAC experts observed a slight shift in traffic from Friday to Sunday compared to 2023. Last year, only 24 percent of all weekend traffic jams occurred on Sunday.
