ADAC measures holiday ranges of electric cars: Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the best long-distance vehicle

ADAC determines holiday ranges of electric cars: The frontrunner Hyundai Ioniq 6 manages over 931 kilometers with one charge and a 20-minute recharge. Among the fleet cars, the Polestar 2 also fares well with 801 kilometers. In total, 13 electric cars are deemed by the club to be "fully long-distance capable", achieving a total of 750 kilometers.

Missing long-distance capability is still often cited as a disadvantage of electric cars. The upcoming holiday season has prompted ADAC to examine over 80 e-vehicles for their travel suitability. For the evaluation, the experts based their calculations on the range determined in the ADAC Ecotest. This range contributes 90 percent to the holiday scenario calculation since travelers typically head for the charging station when the battery reaches about ten percent. Additionally, the range that can be recharged under ideal conditions during a 20-minute stop at a fast charger was added. This results in the “total range,” which ADAC defines as a measure of long-distance capability.

The frontrunner in the ADAC evaluation is the Hyundai Ioniq 6 with a 77.4 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, achieving a total range of 931 kilometers with one charging stop. Lucid Air (859 kilometers), BMW iX (835 kilometers), Mercedes EQS (825 kilometers), EQE SUV (806 kilometers), and Polestar 2 (801 kilometers) each achieve a range of over 800 kilometers in the tested versions.

Fully long-distance capable are those who achieve 750 kilometers

The mobility club classifies all vehicles that achieve a total range of over 750 kilometers with one charging stop as "fully long-distance capable." So far, 13 electric vehicles have managed this in the ADAC test. Another 42 vehicles, with ranges between 750 and 500 kilometers, are evaluated as "long-distance capable" or "long-distance capable with somewhat longer charging time." The club certifies "conditional long-distance capability" (500 to 400 kilometers range) for 14 cars. Similarly, 14 of the e-vehicles tested so far, with ranges below 400 kilometers with one charging stop, are considered "hardly long-distance capable." The Fiat 500e, with a 23.8 kWh battery, ranks at the bottom, achieving only 233 kilometers despite recharging.

Consumers should not only pay attention to battery size when purchasing an electric car, but also to power consumption and charging time. Additionally, the vehicle should offer battery pre-conditioning – ideally automatic through the navigation system and manually activatable. A properly tempered battery is crucial for the highest possible charging performance during rapid charging under cold conditions. Moreover, the ADAC urges manufacturers to indicate WLTP ranges not only at warm but also at cold outdoor temperatures to create greater transparency.
