Autumn leaves not only cause slippery roads but can also lead to damage in the vehicle interior and the paintwork. ADAC Südbayern explains how to prevent this danger and what to consider in the process.

Focus on Preventing Damage

In autumn, drivers should not only adjust their driving style but also focus on avoiding potential vehicle damage caused by leaves.

"Falling leaves often get stuck unnoticed in the crevices of the vehicle, disappear into them, and can clog the rain drains," explains Thomas Schwarz, deputy head of vehicle technology at ADAC Südbayern.

This mainly affects the area between the hood and the windshield, which is designed differently depending on the vehicle type. The consequence: Rainwater doesn't drain away through the designated channels but ends up inside the cabin.

This not only leads to fogged-up windows and musty odors but also to costly disassemblies and drying work in the workshop. Additionally, this water ingress is often associated with expensive damage to electronics, such as control units. Moreover, if the leaves are not removed from the bodywork for an extended period, their tannic acid can lead to discolorations in the paint surface.

Remove hidden leaves with a vacuum cleaner

To avoid unnecessary trouble, such as water damage in the car as well as electronic and rust damage, affected drivers should regularly remove autumn leaves from the body and grooves, according to ADAC Südbayern.

This usually works quickly and effortlessly by hand. In deep spots, using a vacuum cleaner can help. However, if there is already water in the interior, a visit to the workshop and the drying of the interior are unavoidable.

What does that mean?

Leaves can be a small cause, but in the worst case, have a big impact. Therefore: Sweep them away!
