ADAC: Electric cars hard to sell in the used market

Price comparison for used car buying portals: Electric cars are currently difficult to sell and if they are, it's below value. Offers for diesel and gasoline vehicles are almost always higher than the appraiser's value.

ADAC has compared used car purchasing platforms and notes a current difficulty in mediating the sale of e-cars. The club compared the offers of five portals operating in Germany (wirkaufendeinauto.de, AutoScout24, mobile.de, Autohaus Tabor, and HUK Autowelt) for three used cars (diesel, petrol, e-car) with a dealer purchase price (average value) determined in advance by three independent experts. The surprising result: The expert values were achieved or even exceeded by the portals for both the diesel and petrol vehicles, with one exception – good news for sellers of such used cars.

A completely different story with the electric car: Three of the five providers in the test refused to buy it completely. The offers from the remaining two portals were significantly below the dealer purchase price – good news for potential buyers of used e-cars, who can currently expect to find bargains.

The offers from the buying portals varied considerably in the investigation: For the gasoline car (Seat Leon, year 2015), all five offers were above the appraiser's price of 6,467 euros. The range was from 6,500 euros (mobile.de) to 9,282 euros (wirkaufendeinauto.de). For the diesel car (VW Caddy, year 2015), only one offer (mobile.de/8,000 euros) was slightly below the dealer purchase price of 8,383 euros. All others exceeded the appraiser's valuation up to the highest price of 10,117 euros (HUK Autowelt). The electric car (VW ID.3, year 2020), on the other hand, proved difficult to sell. Only HUK Autowelt (17,610 euros) and AutoScout24 (15,000 euros) made offers below the appraiser's price of 18,183 euros.
