ADAC database: Only four small cars left under 15,000 euros

The unfavorable growth in size, detrimental to climate protection and space requirements, continues. With the discontinuation of many small car models, prices are also rising. No German manufacturers are involved anymore. Fiat and Mitsubishi falter in terms of safety.

The rising vehicle prices and the discontinuation of many micro and small car models have led to a shortage of affordable cars, as noted by the automotive club ADAC in a recent analysis. Currently, there are only four models in the ADAC database that cost less than 15,000 euros. The cheapest car on the German market is thus the Dacia Sandero, which is available from 11,300 euros. Added to this are the Fiat Panda from Italy, the Citroën C3 from France, and the Mitsubishi Space Star.

Successful concept: Renault technology, Dacia price

The ADAC has thoroughly examined and compared the four import models in the ADAC Auto Test. The Dacia Sandero TCe90 Expression wins the comparison test with a score of 3.0 and receives a clear buying recommendation. It is based on the current Renault Clio/Captur, offers the most space, the strongest engine, and extensive comfort and safety features at an affordable price. The Citroën C3 PureTech 83 You! takes second place (score 3.2) with harmonious driving characteristics and adequate space.

The outdated Mitsubishi Space Star 1.2 comes third (score 4.1) due to sparse equipment – no air conditioning, radio, or central locking – and a lack of safety systems. The Fiat Panda 1.0 GSE Hybrid ranks last (score 4.4) because of safety deficiencies and outdated safety equipment. For example, Fiat has removed the city emergency braking assistant and the front side airbags from the 2023 model year onwards.

Strong price increase - with size growth: Small cars are dying out

Overall, the price level of the four models, as well as all other models in the vehicle market, has developed significantly upwards in the last ten years. The Mitsubishi increased by 47 percent, while the Fiat increased by even 61 percent. The most significant price increase was seen with the Sandero: Up until 2019, it was available for less than 7,000 euros; today, the entry-level model with the base engine starts at 11,300 euros. This corresponds to an inflation rate of 62 percent. The auto club views this development on the steadily shrinking small car market as problematic. Vehicle manufacturers should continue to offer affordable vehicles and a broad range of models.
