ADAC: Almost all paper driver's licenses must be exchanged

All drivers born from 1971 onwards who still possess a paper driving license must exchange it for a credit card-style one by January 19, 2025, at the latest. This will see the last paper driving licenses still in circulation disappear. With one exception: those born before 1953 must have their driving license exchanged by 2033. Older credit card-style driving licenses only need to be exchanged starting from 2026. The exchange is mandatory.

New Driver's License Valid for 15 Years

The new driver's license is valid for 15 years, but the expiration date only pertains to the driver's license document and not to the content of the driving authorization. No new examination is required, and a medical examination is also not necessary. However, this only applies to car and motorcycle licenses, and it is different for truck and bus licenses.

Apply for Exchange in Time

Anyone who is still driving with the old driver's license after the deadline risks a warning fine of 10 euros. However, driving without a valid license is not considered a criminal offense for car or motorcycle drivers. In addition, renting a car could become problematic. Problems may also arise abroad if you continue to use the old driver's license after the deadline has passed.

The ADAC recommends applying for the exchange in time at the driver's license office. For the exchange, an identity document, a biometric passport photo, and the current driver's license are required. The exchange costs around 25 euros.
