ACE Test: German Fast Charging Stations Are Much Better Than Their Reputation
How well can I currently charge my electric car while traveling in Germany? This was investigated by the Auto Club Europa (ACE). A total of 189 fast-charging stations with a total of 1,737 charging points were examined between April 1 and July 31, 2024. Only facilities located along a highway or a federal road were considered.
The club's conclusion: The charging stations are better than their reputation. According to the findings, the majority of the facilities (61 percent) have "passed" the test, while 37 percent were even awarded the rating "excellent." However, there is still much room for improvement in terms of accessibility. Only 12 percent of the 189 charging stations offer at least one barrier-free parking space.
Only three stations failed - but barely
However, only three stations in total "failed". The club mentions that they narrowly missed a "pass". Nationwide, the average score was 13.17 out of a possible 19 points. The test focused on the categories of charging performance, payment options, usability, accessibility, road safety, and service & family-friendliness. The survey form designed by ACE with 24 criteria addressed questions such as: "Can one charge on the spot – even without a charging card?", "Can people with disabilities easily access and operate the charging station?", "Do drivers of electric cars have to stand in the rain or in the dark during the charging stop?", "Is there a gastronomic offer and the possibility to use a toilet?"
