Accelera from Cummins, the "New Power" business unit of Cummins Inc., Daimler Trucks & Buses US Holding LLC, and Paccar have selected Marshall County in the state of Mississippi as the future location for their planned battery cell production joint venture. According to the announcement, the joint venture will manufacture battery cells for electric commercial vehicles, creating more than 2,000 manufacturing jobs. Expansion options are available in case of increased demand. The 21-gigawatt-hour (GWh) factory is scheduled to start battery cell production in 2027.

Production of Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries

In September 2023, Accelera, Daimler Truck, and Paccar announced the planned joint venture, which provides a high degree of scalability and access to cost-effective and differentiating battery cell technology, supporting the market ramp-up of medium and heavy-duty electric commercial vehicles in North America. Accelera, Daimler Truck, and Paccar will each hold 30 percent of the joint venture and jointly control it.

The company will focus on Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery technology for application in battery-electric commercial vehicles. EVE Energy will be the technology partner in the joint venture, holding a 10 percent ownership stake, and will contribute its industry-leading expertise in battery cell design and manufacturing to the future battery cell factory. EVE Energy is a global leader in LFP battery cells for the vehicle industry.

“The site selection is another exciting and concrete step on the path of our Destination-Zero strategy and underscores our vision to lead the industry in decarbonization,” says Jennifer Rumsey, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Cummins. “We look forward to becoming part of Marshall County and promoting economic growth and job creation in Mississippi. At the same time, we continue to build on our strong partnerships and meet our diverse customer needs.”

“Local production of battery cells is an important component in offering our customers – the transport fleets that move America and the world – cost-efficient solutions to decarbonize their operations,” says John O’Leary, President and CEO of Daimler Truck North America. “We thank the State of Mississippi and Marshall County for supporting us in implementing this endeavor and achieving our shared climate goals.”

“For Paccar, the State, communities, and people of Mississippi have always been excellent business partners. We look forward to expanding this partnership in northern Mississippi with this new battery cell factory. This production facility will be industry-leading and offer our customers cost-effective and emission-free solutions,” said Preston Feight, Paccar Chief Executive Officer.

According to their own statements, Accelera, Daimler Truck, and Paccar aim to lead the transformation of the commercial vehicle industry towards sustainable and emission-free technologies. The partners are committed to reducing CO2 emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and obtaining the necessary approvals from antitrust and regulatory authorities, including the submission of a voluntary complete notice to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).
