In Aberdeen, starting from early March, the first hydrogen-powered garbage truck in the UK will be in operation – powered by green hydrogen. It can empty both conventional garbage bins and collect recycling and bulk containers. The chassis comes from Hyzon Motors, and the body from Geesinknorba, one of the largest European providers of refuse collection vehicles and presses.

Part of the Hector Project

The garbage truck for the metropolis in the northeast of Scotland was funded under the Interreg North-West Europe program as part of the Hector Project (Hydrogen Waste Collection Vehicles in North West Europe). It is part of a growing H2 fleet of currently 85 hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, including hydrogen-powered buses and other municipal vehicles. It is therefore not only expected to save CO2 compared to the diesel units used so far, but also to collect data that will support the operation of hydrogen-powered garbage collectors in the future. Even after the project's end in June 2023, the participating vehicles are expected to remain in operation.

Seven Pilot Locations

The fuel cell waste collection vehicle from Aberdeen is one of seven being deployed at seven pilot locations in Northwestern Europe – including Arnhem and Groningen (NL), Duisburg and Herten (D), Touraine Vallee de l’Indre (F), and Brussels (BEL). Each vehicle will be tested in various environments, ranging from rural areas to city centers.

The launch of the new waste collection vehicle follows the establishment of a new joint venture company with BP, which aims to set up the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub. (Ryan Houghton, City Councilor for Growth and Resources in Aberdeen)

The deployment of the H2 waste collection vehicle is another building block in Aberdeen's hydrogen concept, which started last year with the procurement of 15 fuel-cell double-deckers from Wrightbus.
