ABB Terra 360: Fastest DC Charging Station in the World

With the new "Terra 306," the Swiss technology group ABB is bringing to market what it claims to be the fastest DC charging station in the world for electric cars.

Not long ago, DC chargers with 150 kW charging power were considered the "kings" of fast chargers. In the meantime, we are moving beyond 200 kW – up to 360 kW with the new ABB Terra. With this power, an average electric car can theoretically be charged in a maximum of 15 minutes – but more importantly, the "refueling" of 100 kilometers of range: And that takes three minutes more. In comparison: Currently, Tesla V3 superchargers charge with a maximum of 250 kW. And the number of ultra-fast charging stations offering 350 kW charging power is still (yet) manageable – as is the number of manufacturers, with more and more jumping on this bandwagon.

ABB also benefits from its commercial vehicle charging technology: In truck and bus depots, there are now charging solutions that offer up to 2.2 MW. Modular design is always important with fast chargers: Thanks to dynamic load management, up to four electric cars can be charged at the Terra 360 station – with the Terra 184, only two vehicles could "refuel".

In the application renderings, this exact "refueling process" is also envisioned: No longer parked perpendicular to the side, but for vans and commercial vehicles in their own lane, where you stop next to the pillar as you would at any gas pump – and after 10 to 15 minutes, you have enough electricity for the next 300 km leg.

More comfort and individuality

In addition, charging should become more pleasant: With an LED lighting system, the pillar informs the user about the battery's charging status and displays the remaining charging time via a display. Thanks to the low-lying charging plugs and a cable retraction system, the Terra 360 is also convenient for wheelchair users, requiring only minimal effort to handle the not-so-light cables.

ABB can also customize the system to customer specifications. With different films or special LED colors, various color concepts and moods can be realized. Providers can, for instance, play informational videos or show photos on an integrated 27-inch screen to further shorten the waiting time. The Terra 360 station will be available in Europe from the end of 2021 and in the USA, Latin America, and Asia from 2022.

ABB has been active in electromobility since 2010 and describes itself as a global market leader. To date, ABB claims to have sold more than 460,000 charging stations for electric vehicles in over 88 countries. ABB Germany's electromobility competence team operates with a double-digit number of employees at the Mannheim, Heidelberg, and Ladenburg locations.

What does this mean?

ABB leverages its know-how from the commercial vehicle and B2B sectors with the Terra 360. And now, it is launching a new push in the area of fast chargers for passenger cars.
