5G has been available in Germany for three years. A survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom among 553 industrial companies with more than 100 employees in Germany now shows that 85 percent of manufacturing companies consider the availability of 5G important. For 52 percent, the radio standard is very important, for 33 percent it is rather important.

Almost four times as many companies rely on 5G in production

29 percent of the companies are already using 5G in production. In the previous year, only eight percent used the radio standard. In addition, 42 percent are planning or discussing its use. In the future, companies want to use 5G even more intensively. Thus, one fifth (21 percent) intend to rely exclusively on 5G as a radio standard in 2025 - currently, only five percent use 5G exclusively. Ten percent predominantly use 5G and 13 percent use it partially or only very slightly.

"5G achieves exceptionally high data rates with low latency, thus ensuring highly reliable, secure, and fast data transmission. This allows companies to make their production flexible, mobile, and efficient," explains Nick Kriegeskotte, Head of Infrastructure and Regulation at Bitkom. "The industry in Germany has recognized these advantages but still needs to establish the communication standard within companies."

5G investments are increasing

Companies that are using, planning, or discussing the use of 5G estimate that they will invest on average more than 610,000 euros in the radio standard in 2022 – last year, the investment volume was estimated at around 560,000 euros on average.

“People and machines are increasingly interacting and communicating digitally and networked. 5G provides the corresponding infrastructure with powerful networks for this. It is worthwhile for companies to invest in the radio standard,” says the Bitkom expert.

What does this mean?

In studies on the expansion of fiber optics, specifically in stationary internet, Germany lags far behind the leading industrial nations. In the mobile sector, however, Germany is among the front-runners. While the measured download speed in South Korea – the leader in network expansion – was still more than 3.5 times higher, Germany achieved fifth place among the 19 most important industrial nations in a ranking in August 2021, far ahead of countries like the USA, Singapore, or Canada.
