In the run-up to the presentation of the 42nd KS Energy and Environmental Award in the categories of Vehicle Technology and Mobility Systems on July 5th at the Old Congress Hall in Munich, Ole Eilers, President of the KS Automobile Club, called for more innovative spirit, courage to change, and commitment from the actors in the mobility industry.

"In the current significant structural transformation, we need innovations for Germany as an industrial location more than ever. Although the current upheavals and changes are sometimes very painful, we should all pull together here and move forward boldly. After all, the future of mobility is made of courage, trust, and clever minds," he emphasized.

The renowned KS Energy and Environmental Award has been announced in two categories since last year: the category of Vehicle Technology and the category of Mobility Systems.

Category Vehicle Technology

According to Eilers, the path to E-technology remains rocky and paved with numerous open questions regarding charging infrastructure, ranges, charging times, and battery quality. However, the path to e-mobility has now become irreversible. It has increasingly shown that the parallel management of three or four different technologies is simply not economically viable.

In the case of lithium-ion batteries, the price per kilowatt-hour has fallen by 90% over the past ten years, while battery capacity has doubled. Despite this, the e-car market, with around 1.5 million vehicles on German roads, still lags significantly behind the 15 million targeted by the federal government by the end of the decade.

Category Mobility Systems

According to Eilers, a mobility transition requires urban and rural areas to realign. But every individual should also be prepared to rethink their mobility behavior. Overall, it is important to achieve a reasonable networking of various innovative mobility systems or modes of transport. Only if these modes of transport are cleverly combined and always used where they can maximize their advantages will it be possible to reduce emissions or reclaim space.

“We all feel that the old world of mobility is changing. This transformation comes with many question marks and unsettles us. But only if we all now collectively commit with a clear 'yes' to this change will we be able to achieve the targeted climate goals in the mobility sector,” said Eilers.

Especially in these highly volatile times, the automobile club KS e.V. is convinced that with its KS Energy and Environment Award this year, it can once again highlight the high innovative capacity of the industry.
