1KOMMA5° and Wallbox Chargers jointly offer bidirectional charging technology for the first time.

Homeowners can apply for up to 10,200 euros in subsidies for electric cars, wallboxes, photovoltaic systems, and energy storage from KfW starting September 26, 2023.

1KOMMA5°, the provider of climate-neutral energy systems, and Wallbox Chargers, a globally leading provider of charging solutions for electric vehicles, will collaborate in the future. The aim of the partnership is to charge electric vehicles in an ecologically and economically optimized manner and to seamlessly integrate the electric car into the home's energy ecosystem.

Car battery becomes part of a virtual power plant

For this, the companies are jointly providing the necessary components. In addition to charging with self-produced solar power, the partners will also make bi-directional charging accessible to homeowners. This way, the vehicle battery becomes part of the 1KOMMA5° virtual power plant and can thus discharge electricity when it yields returns on the electricity exchange or store electricity when it is particularly cheap or even free.

As a kickoff of the collaboration, the Commander 2s charger will seamlessly integrate into the 1KOMMA5° Heartbeat home energy management system (HEMS). Systems connected with Heartbeat are automatically controlled by software to procure electricity directly from the exchange at particularly favorable prices. Combined with the dynamic electricity tariff from 1KOMMA5°, the operating costs for sustainable mobility can be reduced by over 50% compared to regular tariffs.

Commander 2s has a charging capacity of 11 or 22 kilowatts and thus meets the required minimum performance of the subsidy guideline. This guideline stipulates that non-bidirectional charging stations are eligible for a subsidy of 600 euros if they offer a minimum performance of 11 kilowatts. Besides its easy usability and integrated charging cable, the AC Charger Commander 2s offers further advantages. For example, thanks to RFID identification, it can also be used communally. Wallbox Chargers devices are of high quality and have repeatedly been ADAC test winners.

In the future, the car will become a home storage unit

As part of the partnership, 1KOMMA5° will next integrate the bi-directional home charger Quasar 2 into Heartbeat. Quasar 2 enables the electricity stored in the car battery to be fed back and thus turns EVs into powerful energy management devices and mobile electricity storage units. Quasar 2 supports feed-in into the public electricity grid (Vehicle to Grid, V2G) and the house power grid (Vehicle to Home, V2H).

A 50-kWh car battery covers household electrical needs for three days

With an average EV battery size of 50 kWh, the usual electricity needs of a household can be covered for more than three days. Homeowners thus gain more control over their energy consumption. The flexibilization of electricity consumption in the context of bi-directional charging also has the potential to relieve the power grid and cushion peak loads.

Lower energy costs: You can save up to 1000 euros per year

Quasar 2 enables EV drivers to reduce their energy costs through V2H and V2G functions. Studies show that users of bi-directional charging can save up to 1,000 euros per year, live more sustainably, and contribute to alleviating the increasing pressure on the power grid. Users with a PV system can reduce their electricity costs by using the additional storage capacity of the EV for surplus self-generated solar power. This can be discharged and used when, for example, no solar energy is being generated. This optimizes solar power generation and usage. Combined with “Dynamic Pulse,” the dynamic electricity tariff from 1KOMMA5°, users can furthermore charge and store electricity when it is cheap and discharge it when prices rise. This is the case, for example, during peak loads in the evening.

Philipp Schröder, co-founder and CEO of 1KOMMA5°, explains:

“Bidirectional charging is an important building block to make the potential of millions of batteries usable for the energy transition. With this technology, we can store particularly cheap electricity, which is sometimes available for free on the electricity market, in a decentralized manner through our 'Heartbeat' platform. At the same time, we can now also temporarily store our own stored solar power in the car battery and make it available at home or precisely on the electricity market, for example whenever the price is particularly high."

Eduard Castañeda, CIO of Wallbox Chargers, adds:

"This cooperation combines the strength of two companies that are driving innovations for more sustainable energy use. We will only be able to successfully manage the transition to electric vehicles and renewable energies if solutions interlock. To make energy more climate-friendly, corporate and cross-sector collaborations are essential.”

What does this mean?

V2X is coming – and bidirectional charging is essential in the future to build stable power grids. More and more are making their way there.
